The Roman Empire
The Roman Empire, in its later years often called the Byzantine Empire, was a state founded in the year 27 BC by Octavian as the successor to the earlier Roman Republic and Roman Kingdom. Initially based around Rome in Italy, the capital of the Roman Empire changed several times, most famously in 330 to Constantinople in modern-day Istanbul, Turkey (Turkiye). The Roman/Byzantine Empire lasted up until the year 1453 when the city of Constantinople was conquered by Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire, though several rump states survived up until 1479. Many nations have tried claiming succession to the Roman Empire, including most famously the Ottoman Empire, Russian Empire and Holy Roman Empire, though none of these claims are seen as legitimate by modern scholars for various reasons.
For over a millennium, Rome was a hub of artistic, military and legal innovation. For instance, the corpus juris civilis, drafted and compiled under Emperor Justinian the Great, is the basis for much of the west's legal framework.

Thought Rome often prospered, it also had periods of decline and disasters, most famously the 3rd Century Crisis, Barbarian Invasions, Justinian Plague, Arab Invasions, Fourth Crusade and Palaiologian Civil Wars.
